Upholstered Daybed

Upholstered Daybed – Contemporary Or Traditional?

The upholstered day bed is an amazing piece of furniture.  It is usually larger and more striking than a standard day bed, but be careful as they are rather space hungry.

The upholstered day bed is a piece of furniture which makes a statement, so it is worth reviewing exactly how much space you have before you get too carried away.  It is also worth deciding how you will organise the furniture around the day bed to ensure that you do not end up with a space which is overpowered by furniture and looses its charm.

There are several different styles of upholstered daybeds; one of the oldest and most well known daybed designs are those based on the French chaise longue.  Within the chaise longue style there were several important design differences.

Firstly there were those where the ends were tied up.  These usually were high backed and had rather ornate wooden carvings to which the ends were attached using a cord.  There was a smaller version of these which the French sometimes refer to as a reading chair.  This would usually have a slightly lower back than the chaise longue, it would also only have one side; that is it would have a head board, but nothing at the feet.  It gives the effect of being rather triangular.  It is a smaller and more delicate version and fit perfectly into many different room designs.  Both of these style daybeds are becoming increasingly popular and hence easier to find.

If, however, you are looking for a more contemporary look for your upholstered daybed then don’t panic.  One of the contemporary looks which has really taken off recently are the leather daybeds.

Leather is a very good fabric for daybeds, sofas and chairs as it lasts well.  Many people actually believe that leather looks better as it ages.  Leather furniture is on the pricey side, but you will be buying an item of furniture which will last and not need repairs or replacing.

Many of the leather upholstered daybeds are available with a trundle bed option.  This is for two reasons.  Firstly, when you are spending a large amount on an item of furniture the manufacturers will usually want to make sure that you feel you are getting value for money.  The second reason is that the design really lends itself to a trundle bed underneath.  Leather upholstered daybeds tend to be very solid looking pieces of furniture and accordingly they tend to have a solid base which extends to the floor, or almost to the floor.  This makes a perfect place to conceal a trundle bed and mattress.

With the leather upholstered daybeds the mattress will not always be leather, so there will be a coordinated colour scheme for the item.  If you want a look where the mattress is less obvious you will have to stay away from the leather and stick with the fabric options.  With fabrics it is always worth checking how you wash the fabric, or looking for the ultimate best option; removable covers.

There are now a large range of contemporary fabric upholstered daybeds.  These often have a square or rectangular look to them, rather than the smoother round edged look of the leather sofas.

Which ever upholstered daybed you choose you can be sure that it will have a great impact on your room and will be a comfortable place to sit or sleep for many years.
